Portland, Oregon is known for their wet winters, and where there is moisture, there is a potential for mold. Mold can be stopped from growing when it is deprived of warmth and food, but existing mold will remain dormant until it gets adequate warmth, moisture and food. Mold has the ability to withstand far cooler temperatures than is maintained in a home in the wintertime.

When water freezes it expands and can cause cracks in your home and allow water to get into the walls of your home. This additional moisture can instigate mold that may not even be detectable until it’s too late.

Running a heating system can cause the interior of the home to become very dry. Some people combat this issue by implementing a humidifier. If you choose to use a humidifier, make certain that it does not create excessive moisture and that a humidity level of 40% or below is maintained.

Some possible airborne sources of mold can be removed with regular vacuuming and dusting. Attention should be paid to the bathroom and kitchen and areas where excessive moisture is a potential. In less than 24 hours, an unchecked damp area can spur on a full blown mold issue.

The use of area rugs over washable flooring instead of wall to wall carpeting in areas where moisture can become a problem is a good measure to take.  Additionally, it is a bad idea to install carpeting in a highly trafficked entryway, as wet boots and snow can permeate carpeting and become a breeding ground for mold.

Clothes and paper goods can be sources of food for mold. It’s never a good idea to store these items in damp areas like a basement, particularly near walls or on the floor.

Windows should be properly sealed. Warm air can consolidate on cool glass and permeate into cracks. Mold can form in spaces or cracks on your windows if they are not properly sealed.

Make certain that your gutters and downspouts are clean and in proper working order. The purpose of a gutter system is to divert water away from your home and its foundation. If water is being allowed to pool around your home’s foundation, consider extending your downspouts.

Bathrooms and kitchens utilize exhaust fans to vent moisture out of the area. These fans should NOT exhaust into an attic or crawlspace, as the trapped moisture can create mold. Check your exhaust fans and make sure they are properly ventilated.

Running a dehumidifier in your basement crawlspace is a good preventative measure to prevent mold, as is lining the exposed ground with waterproof polyethylene plastic.
