Water Damage: Time is of the essence!
2/19/2019 (Permalink)
Major water damage requires a bit more than just a mop and a few towels. Failure to start the remediation process as soon as possible can put you at risk for more extensive damage. The IICRC recommends starting any major water remediation process immediately to avoid severe, long term structural problems.
Here are just a FEW examples of some of the issues you can face if you wait to act on a water loss:
Failure to ventilate and dehumidify the structure in an expedient manor can result in extensive mold growth. Even after the structure has been dried, additional anti-microbial measures should be taken to avoid growth in the future. A professional should be contacted to determine the areas with higher mold susceptibility.
DRY ROT/ STRUCTURAL DAMAGE
The area needs to be dried in a timely manner to avoid wood rot. Wood is not the only building material subject to damage when exposed to water. For example, laminate, and other materials can separate from the surface with long tern water exposure.
HEALTH RELATED ISSUES
Heath problems associated with mold growth are well documented. Another concern that should be considered is the type of water that created the damage. Clean water can cause enough damage on it’s own, but when black or grey water is added to the mix, dangerous fungus, bacteria and other micro-organisms become a concern.
