As we are in the Pacific Northwest, the Portland metro area can be susceptible to thunderstorms and lightning events. While these events can be considered common, they still possess potential dangers and it’s important to be aware of how to stay safe while they pass. Here at SERVPRO of Northwest Portland, we’d like to share some vital information regarding thunderstorm safety.
Did you know that lightning is a leading cause of injury and death from weather-related hazards? While most lightning victims survive, those struck by lightning often report long-term symptoms.
Thunderstorms are dangerous storms - they can cause lightning, powerful winds, flash flooding, and even tornadoes.
If you hear thunder, or a thunderstorm is reported by the weather service, it is advised that you stay indoors. While both a car and a building can be adequate shelter from thunderstorms, a sturdy building is the safest place to be while it passes.
Ensure that you have emergency supplies such as candles, matches, first aid, food and water in the event that a power outage occurs during the storm.
Always stay informed via The Emergency Alert System (EAS) and the National Weather Service (NWS).
