The Fallout of Pipe Breaks During Winter Due to Freezing Temperatures
10/3/2024 (Permalink)
SERVPRO Vehicles
As winter sets in across Portland, homeowners are often focused on staying warm and cozy. However, the cold weather can bring an all-too-common disaster: pipe breaks due to freezing temperatures. When temperatures plummet, pipes are at risk of freezing, and if not properly insulated, they can burst—leading to significant water damage. SERVPRO of NW Portland is here to help you understand the risks and how to respond quickly in the event of a pipe break.
Why Pipes Break During Winter
When temperatures drop below freezing, any water left in uninsulated pipes can freeze and expand. This expansion puts immense pressure on the pipe walls, causing them to crack or even burst. The pipes most at risk are those located in unheated or exposed areas, such as basements, attics, garages, and exterior walls.
Here are some key reasons pipes break in the winter:
Inadequate Insulation: Pipes located in poorly insulated areas or exterior walls are more prone to freezing.
Sudden Temperature Drops: A sudden, sharp drop in temperature increases the risk of pipes freezing, especially if homeowners are unprepared.
Inactivity: Homes left unattended during winter vacations or extended absences may experience pipe bursts, especially if the heat is turned off or reduced too much.
Old or Weak Pipes: Older homes or homes with older plumbing systems may have pipes that are more susceptible to cracking under pressure.
The Fallout of a Pipe Break
A burst pipe can quickly turn from a minor inconvenience to a major disaster. The consequences of a pipe break include:
Water Damage: Once a pipe bursts, the water that leaks can quickly flood areas of your home, soaking walls, floors, and personal belongings. If left untreated, water damage can lead to structural damage and costly repairs.
Mold Growth: Moisture from a burst pipe can linger in hard-to-reach areas, leading to mold growth. Mold not only damages your property but also poses health risks to your family.
Damage to Electrical Systems: Water from a pipe break can easily come into contact with electrical systems, causing short circuits or even fire hazards.
Costly Repairs: Beyond repairing the pipe itself, water damage can necessitate replacing drywall, flooring, insulation, and furniture. If mold takes hold, the costs of remediation can be even higher.
Preventing Pipe Breaks in Winter
Preventing frozen pipes and the fallout of a burst pipe is possible with some proactive measures. Here are steps homeowners can take:
Insulate Pipes: Ensure that pipes located in unheated areas, such as crawl spaces, attics, and exterior walls, are properly insulated. Pipe insulation sleeves or wrapping pipes with heat tape can help keep them from freezing.
Keep the Heat On: Even if you’re going away during the winter, keep your thermostat set to at least 55°F to prevent pipes from freezing.
Let Faucets Drip: Allowing faucets to drip slightly during extremely cold weather can help relieve pressure in the pipes, reducing the chance of a burst.
Seal Gaps and Cracks: Seal any gaps or cracks around pipes that may allow cold air to reach them. This is especially important around windows, doors, and electrical wiring.
Disconnect Outdoor Hoses: Before the first freeze, disconnect any garden hoses from outdoor faucets to prevent freezing in the connected pipes.

Ice Dams: How They Can Cause Water Damage to Homes in Winter
10/3/2024 (Permalink)
Flooded Bedroom
Winter in Portland brings the usual mix of rain, snow, and freezing temperatures. While snow can create picturesque scenes, it can also lead to hidden dangers for homeowners, especially when it comes to ice dams. Ice dams are a common winter problem that can cause significant water damage to your home if not properly addressed. SERVPRO of NW Portland is here to help you understand the dangers of ice dams and how to prevent water damage.
What Are Ice Dams?
An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms along the edge of a roof, preventing melted snow from properly draining off. When snow accumulates on your roof and starts to melt due to rising temperatures or heat escaping from your attic, the water can flow down toward the colder edges of your roof. As it reaches these colder areas, the water refreezes, creating an ice barrier or dam.
Once the ice dam forms, any additional melted snow has nowhere to go, causing water to back up behind the dam. This trapped water can seep underneath shingles and into your home, leading to water damage in the walls, ceilings, insulation, and more.
How Ice Dams Cause Water Damage
Ice dams may appear harmless, but they can lead to severe water damage in several ways:
Leaking Roof: The most immediate danger is water seeping through your roof. As the ice dam prevents proper drainage, water backs up and infiltrates roofing materials. This can cause leaks inside your home, damaging ceilings, walls, and insulation.
Interior Water Damage: Once water enters your home, it can damage drywall, wood framing, and other structural elements. Over time, this moisture can weaken these materials, leading to costly repairs.
Mold Growth: Water trapped in your home’s walls and insulation can create a perfect environment for mold growth. Mold not only damages your home but can also pose health risks to your family.
Gutter Damage: The weight of ice dams can cause your gutters to become dislodged or damaged. Broken gutters prevent proper water drainage and can further contribute to water damage around your home’s foundation.
Preventing Ice Dams
Preventing ice dams before they form is key to avoiding water damage. Here are some steps you can take:
Proper Insulation: One of the most effective ways to prevent ice dams is by ensuring your attic is properly insulated. This helps prevent heat from escaping through the roof, keeping the surface cold and minimizing snow melt.
Roof Ventilation: Adequate roof ventilation helps maintain a consistent temperature across the roof, preventing snow from melting unevenly. A well-ventilated attic allows cold air to circulate, reducing the chances of ice dams forming.
Remove Snow Safely: If you experience heavy snowfalls, use a roof rake to safely remove snow from the edges of your roof. This reduces the amount of snow that can melt and refreeze, helping to prevent ice dams.
Seal Air Leaks: Seal any gaps or cracks in your attic or around your roof that may allow warm air to escape. This includes checking for leaks around vents, chimneys, and other openings.
Heated Cables: In some cases, homeowners may install heated cables along the edge of the roof to help melt snow and prevent ice dams from forming. However, this solution should be used with caution and proper installation.
What to Do If You Have an Ice Dam
If you already have an ice dam, taking quick action is crucial to prevent water damage:
Safely Remove Snow: If it’s safe to do so, use a roof rake to clear snow from the roof's edge. This helps to minimize additional water buildup behind the ice dam.
Call a Professional: Removing an ice dam can be dangerous if not done properly. It’s best to call a professional who can safely remove the ice and snow using specialized equipment.
Address Water Damage Immediately: If water has already seeped into your home, it’s essential to address the damage as soon as possible. SERVPRO of NW Portland provides emergency water damage restoration services to mitigate the damage and prevent mold growth.

How to deal with Water Damage
2/23/2022 (Permalink)
Large Scale Mitigation Equipment
When you think of severe water damage, the first images that come to mind are probably severe flooding with cars floating down the street and a basement fully immersed in water. Rain and flooding do cost business and home owners tens of millions of dollars in repairs annually, but a slow and persistent water leak can also lead to catastrophic damage if not addressed in a timely manner. We explore the consequences of allowing a slow leak to continue.
Structure Damage
Your home relies on wood and metal materials. Water can weaken wood and corrode metal. Over time, this weakening can lead to floors buckling and walls and ceilings collapsing.
Sheetrock is also prone to water damage. The gypsum materials in sheetrock can act as a sponge, drawing in the water and weakening the walls. This is also prime breeding ground for mold growth.
Untreated brick and concrete are also susceptible to damage. Continued exposure to water can cause cracks and erosion. If the water freezes and then thaws out, the damage left can be severe, requiring expensive and extensive repairs to the foundation.
Flooring and fixtures
Water can weaken the backing of your carpeting and rugs and make them more susceptible to damage. Additionally, carpeting is not intended to get wet and can attract mold, mildew and insects when it is not dried out right away.
Constant leaks can also cause corrosive damage to metal fixtures such as sink and shower heads. The constant water can cause decay over time to rubber gaskets and cause the water pressure to decrease.
In the bathroom, an unattended leak can lead to loosening tiles in your shower or countertops. Leaks in the kitchen can lead to buckling floors and discoloration.
Mold & Other Pests
When water is allowed to remain stagnant for any period of time, it begins to attract mold, insects and germs. If a wet environment is allowed to remain in your home, airborne pathogens and mold will be attracted to it.
Financially Devastating
Water damage becomes especially expensive when attempting to sell your home. It’s better to be proactive now, than to wait until the 11th hour when your home is already on the market. Home inspectors are trained to look for water and mold damage and will document their findings, no matter how big or small, in their pre-sale inspection report. Potential buyers can use this report to offer substantially less than your asking price or, worse yet, abandon the deal altogether because they feel the home is too much trouble to repair.

A water loss is a very common calamity and a fact of life for many homeowners. Insurance policies can give you peace of mind, but many times, homeowners may not be aware of what is and what is NOT covered in their policy until it’s too late. We review seven common potential water related disaster scenarios below. You may want to update your policy accordingly after reviewing this article.
Broken pipe due to freezing
During the winter months, temperatures can reach extremes that can freeze the water in your pipes and cause them to burst. Most home owner’s policies cover this type of damage unless it was caused by negligence. An example of this would be if you left your home unoccupied and without heat.
Swimming pool leak that results in damage to your basement and lawn
Generally speaking, swimming pool leaks will not be covered in your homeowner’s policy unless the leak was the result of a falling tree. Damage to your basement and personal belongings is usually covered but damage to your lawn is generally not.
Appliance failure
Water damage from a failing appliance, such as an overflowing washing machine or broken toilet is covered if the issue is accidental and not the result of negligence. If you have failed to maintain your appliances and supply hoses, and this results in damage, it will not be covered.
Sewage back up
Although sewage backups are not covered by most standard home owner policies, additional endorsements may be added to the policy for this purpose. If the sewage back up was caused at a city level, you should contact the appropriate authorities in your municipality to discuss your options.
Natural disasters and storms
Damage incurred from floods are not covered in standard homeowner insurance policies. This includes intruding water from overflowing rivers, lakes or seawater, in addition to storms. If you require protection from this type of damage, you will need to get it separately in addition to your standard policy. Check with you insurance agent to find out your options.
Water seepage from ground water beneath your basement
This type of damage is considered a maintenance issue and is not covered in standard homeowner’s insurance policies.
Leakage through roof during or after a rainstorm
If your roof has not been properly maintained, this type of damage will not be covered. However, damage to your belongings may be covered, depending on the type of insurance policy you have. It is always a good idea to perform preventative maintenance to your home, especially if you live in an area with high precipitation, such as the NW Portland and Pacific Northwest area in general.
A lot of homeowners are unsure how to handle mold growth in their home as it pertains to their insurance policy. It is good to educate yourself on this type of claim prior to it occurring.
If you experience a flood in your home or discover that you have a mold issue, call SERVPRO of NW Portland at 503-283-3658 immediately to get the remediation process underway as soon as possible. We deal with insurance companies on a daily basis and can help you navigate your claim. We are always here to help.
Sump pump and your home
11/22/2021 (Permalink)
Standing water
Basements are a common feature in the Portland metro area. With as much precipitation as we commonly receive here, many homeowners have opted to install a water mitigation system in the lowest areas on their basement, complete with a sump pump to remove excess water in the event of overflow or flooding. Although a sump pump is a good investment to protect your basement from flooding, it is not fail proof.
In the event of Sump pump failure
Generally, a sump pump failure will occur during heavy rains of flooding. When the pump fails, or cannot pump water fast enough to prevent flooding, outside water can seep through the foundation or basement walls and cause flooding at the lowest portion of the basement. We’ve listed a few things you can do if your sump pump fails below:
- Contact a trusted plumber in your local area to repair the sump pump. If your sump pump has malfunctioned during wet weather, it is likely that you are not the only one. Contact your plumber ASAP, as he may already have a full schedule due to others facing a similar problem.
- You may consider purchasing a basement water pump at your local hardware store. If the flooding in your basement was the result of a storm in the area, resources may be spread a little thin. Having a backup pump on hand will keep you ahead of the game until professional help can arrive. You can read more about post flood safety here.
- Contact a reputable water restoration contractor such as SERVPRO of NW Portland. Although it doesn’t make sense for a water restoration company to pump out water as fast as it is coming in, there will still be damage to mitigate even after the standing water has been removed. You can read more about the process of water mitigation here.

How to Handle Black Water
3/10/2021 (Permalink)
Water Leak
Black water is defined as any floodwater containing contaminants or viruses the can potentially cause illness or infection. Sewage would qualify as Black water. Any event of sewage back up needs to be addressed immediately. Arming yourself with the knowledge of what causes a sewage back up may help you prevent this occurrence at you home.
Causes of Sewage Back Up
- Clogging – When your home’s main sewer line or drain pipe’s become clogged, there is potential for a sewage back up. An example of this would be if one toilet creates a sewage back up, the drain connected to that particular toilet has become clogged. If all of the toilets in your home begin to back flow, this is a signal that your main sewage line has become clogged. Clogs are caused by solid materials, such as hair or grease.
- Plant Roots – A tree’s root system has the potential to intertwine with sewage lines. Roots can grow into pipes and make holes in it and can also grow around the pipes and potentially crush them. Roots from nearby trees can also travel to your sewage line and cause damage.
- Aging Sewer Lines – Pipes used to be made of easily deteriorating materials such as cast iron and clay. Older systems made with these materials have the potential to break down and split, causing backups and flooding. Fortunately, durable plastic materials have become the plumbing standard.
- Heavy Rains – Sudden heavy rainfall can overwhelm Portland’s sewage system. If a public sewage system can’t withstand a sudden influx of rainwater, the excess water may travel into adjacent sewer lines. This can put your home at risk for backflow.
Preventing Backup at Your Home
- NEVER pour cooking grease down your drain. Oil can harden inside of your pipes as it cools and clog your pipes. The proper way to dispose of cooking grease is to pour it into a heat resistant container and place the container in the trash when it cools off.
- Do not flush paper products. Paper towels, diapers and feminine hygiene products have no business being flushed down the toilet and can very easily clog your drainage system. Dispose of these items properly of risk potential backups later.
- Update the pipes in your drainage system or remove tree roots. A good preventative measure to avoid costly repairs later is to replace your lead or clay sewer lateral pipe (the line in your yard) with an updated plastic pipe. It is also good to cut the tree roots back as they grow near your drainage system.
- Consider installing a backwater prevention valve. This fixture can prevent sewage from backing up into your home. Typically, backwater prevention valves are installed into a sewer line and sometimes into the basement drain line.
If you experience a sewage backup in your home, call SERVPRO of NW Portland immediately to begin the remediation process. Handling black water yourself puts you at risk for disease and infection.

How containment helps the restoration of water damage
1/28/2021 (Permalink)
A containment in a residential home with a zipper opening.
When water damage occurs in a building, there are certain techniques that restorers implement to achieve restoration goals in a timely manner. Here at SERVPRO of Northwest Portland, each water loss restoration project plan is organized by a Project Manager. One technique that our PMs implement to reach drying goals is containment.
If you’ve ever dealt with hazardous materials, such as microbial growth, asbestos, or lead, you are likely familiar with containment. It’s a crucial way to do as the word means - contain the contaminated area and create controlled entryways to the affected area, which prevents the spread of cross-contamination to other areas in the building.
Containments can also be useful in water damage mitigation. Often, it is used to create a controlled airflow and limit the amount of air filtering through drying equipment.
When a containment is set up in a water loss job, it’s likely because the water loss is already limited to a certain area of the home. When that is the case, restorers will set up a polyurethane wall that reduces the room to a smaller space. They tape in an entryway, often a zipper opening, and set the drying equipment inside the containment.
By doing this, restorers are able to remove moisture from the air and material surface in the source area in a quicker, more targeted fashion. This prevents secondary damage, such as microbial growth, from developing.
If you want to see what a containment looks like, view the image attached to this blog.
If you experience a water loss in your property, call SERVPRO of Northwest Portland as soon as possible so the right mitigation plan is implemented in a timely manner.

Here at SERVPRO, we believe it’s important for our community to understand the principles that outline the work we do. The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) is a standards developing organization for the inspection, cleaning, and restoration industries. SERVPRO of Northwest Portland and all other restoration companies follow the standards and guidelines put forth by the IICRC. The standards manual for water damage restoration is the S500.

In this series, we are outlining the principles of water damage restoration work, the first three being Safety, Documentation, and Mitigation. This blog is regarding the third principle outlined in the S500.
S500 Principle 5: Complete the restoration and repairs.
When the restorer’s inspection confirms that moisture content or level of the structure and contents has reached the drying goals, the drying services are done.
The restorer is now ready to begin restoration services - this includes any repairs needed to return the property to its preloss condition. Some restoration companies will do the reconstruction themselves, while others will only go so far before recommending a building owner contact a general contractor.
Many restoration companies will perform demolition before a contractor steps in. This serves a few purposes - it enables the restorer to confirm all structure materials are properly clean, dry and absent of odor from the damage event; it also can be a necessary process of removing the wet material, as materials such as drywall become unsalvageable once waterlogged or contaminated.
As for us at SERVPRO of Northwest Portland, we work closely with a construction team that operates under our roof, separate from our water team but well versed in working with our team. This provides a seamless restoration process and gives our customers the option to choose a restoration that feels like a One-Stop-Shop.
If you experience water intrusion in your home or business, trust SERVPRO of Northwest Portland to handle your needs. Call us any time or day at 503-283-3658.

S500 Principle 4: Clean and dry affected areas.
A restorer’s task is to reduce the time that building materials and contents are excessively wet. The more quickly items are returned to a dry condition, the less damage they will suffer while wet.
Thus, the first step is to remove excess or bulk water where we can. Extraction is the most effective way to remove bulk water. Once any extraction is performed, restorer’s can focus on drying the materials through specialized equipment.
Once materials start returning to a dry state, restorer’s can begin the cleaning process. Contents are moved from the premises and restored in our warehouse, while the structure and attached materials are cleaned depending on material.
Wood, paper, and fabrics can be damaged within hours of water intrusion; furniture stains can start within the first few hours; carpet deterioration can start within 24 to 48 hours; and mold growth can start within 48 hours.

The steps to mitigating further water damage

Here at SERVPRO, we believe it’s important for our community to understand the principles that outline the work we do. The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) is a standards developing organization for the inspection, cleaning, and restoration industries. SERVPRO of Northwest Portland and all other restoration companies follow the standards and guidelines put forth by the IICRC. The standards manual for water damage restoration is the S500.
To learn more about the IICRC, visit our previous blogs on the S500 series The certification firm every restoration professional uses, The importance of safety and health on a restoration worksite, and The importance of documentation on water damage worksite.
In this series, we are outlining the principles of water damage restoration work, the first two being Safety and Documentation. This blog is regarding the third principle outlined in the S500.
S500 Principle 3: Mitigate further damage.
The goal of mitigation is to control the moisture and contamination of the affected areas.
The first step in mitigation is to check for the source of the moisture problems and correct the issue. A building owner is ultimately responsible for correcting the source of water intrusion, but a restoration company will assist in identifying the source. Before any drying can be done, the source of water must be stopped.
The second step in mitigation is control any microbiological contamination resulting from the moisture. If there are contaminants present, they are to be contained to prevent their spread. When there is no obvious microbiological contamination present, the best way to prevent the development of bacteria is to dry the contents and structures quickly. This is why time is of the essence for water damage restoration.
When a crew chief or project manager arrives on-site, they will assess the situation and determine what work activities need to take place. Determining if the water is contaminated is one of the first things they do, as remediation activities may push back any plans for drying the structure.
Before any drying can happen, restoration professionals must identify the category of the water intrusion, create a work activity plan, and prevent any contaminant spread, hazards, or other issues by using engineering controls. These controls can be building contrainments, establishing negative pressure air filtration systems, sealing HVAC ventilation ports, and more.
Once all these details are accounted for, restorers can set up the drying equipment and begin the drying process.
If you experience water intrusion in your home or business, trust SERVPRO of Northwest Portland to handle your needs. Call us any time or day at 503-283-3658.

Here at SERVPRO, we believe it’s important for our community to understand the principles that outline the work we do. Over the coming months, we will be summarizing each principle from the S500 and sharing that knowledge with you.
S500 Principle 2: Document and inspect the project.
Project inspections are ongoing on a water restoration worksite. Inspections are first utilized to assess the safety of the affected area of the property, and then they continue to be conducted during the following steps in the restoration process. Restorers will inspect and measure moisture conditions on a regular basis inside the building and for materials affected.
Additionally, everything is documented during a water restoration project. Restorers will not only document the conditions of the building, but also the work procedures that are followed to address those conditions.
Both regular inspections and thorough documentation are vital to the success of water restoration. They keep the job organized, efficient, and they’re valuable in supporting a restoration professionals conclusions with an insurance company.
Because many actions on a water restoration worksite need adjuster approval before being executed, proper documentation is a valuable process for all restoration professionals.
Ensuring that every detail is accounted for and the restoration process is monitored thoroughly during the project is critical for the work that we do. SERVPRO of Northwest Portland is passionate about having an organized approach when we take on a water restoration project so that we can ensure that the process is smooth for every party involved.

S500 Principle 1: Provide for the Safety and Health of Workers and Occupants.
Safety is everyone’s responsibility on a water damage worksite. A primary concern in water damage safety is protecting restoration employees performing the work, as we often work in unsafe and unhealthy environments due to the nature of the services we provide.
As premier restoration professionals, SERVPRO of Northwest Portland takes all the steps necessary to ensure the safety of all occupants or visitors to the worksite, as well. We will post important signage to prevent visitors and occupants from exposing themselves to hazardous areas in the worksite, or alert them to the safety precautions necessary to be in that area. If we have a scheduled site walk, we will provide all necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which can include hardhats, respirators or face masks, safety vests, and/or protective eyewear.
Before we begin work on a water damage loss, we will assess the property for existing and potential hazards. We call this process H.A.R.M. (Hazard Assessment and Risk Management). The goal of H.A.R.M. is to assess the hazards and implement controls to prevent further hazards from developing.
Part of H.A.R.M. is testing for hazardous materials, such as asbestos and lead. We do not disturb anything in the affected area until after we have received results from our testing. Residential buildings built before 2004 must be tested for asbestos before work can be performed, while all commercial buildings must be tested before work can be performed. All buildings built before 1978 must be tested for lead before work can be performed.
Ensuring a safe work environment is critical for the work that we do. This is just a snapshot of the steps we take at SERVPRO of Northwest Portland to keep a water damage worksite safe for all parties involved.
If you experience a water damage at your property, call SERVPRO of Northwest Portland at 503-283-3658 if you find water damage in your home or business. Don’t hesitate to mitigate the damage the minute you see it!

How to know if water has permanently damaged carpets in your Portland area home

Water damage can occur in any home or business without warning. When it occurs, it’s important to call SERVPRO of Northwest Portland as soon as possible so that we are able to advise you on how to proceed with your water damaged items and structure.
According to the Carpet and Rug Institute, Carpet accounts for 48% of the total U.S. flooring market. As restoration professionals, SERVPRO of Northwest Portland sees water damaged carpet often.
When it comes to carpet restoration after a water damage incident, how damaged the carpet is depends on the quality of the carpet. Delamination is the most frequent type of damage to carpets in a water damage incident. Delamination is caused when the latex adhesive holding the primary backing to the secondary backing of the carpet is wet for an extended amount of time. Good carpets have a higher quality of latex and use more latex.
Cheaper carpets may have delamination after only a few hours. Good quality carpets may suffer little damage even after 48 hours exposure to water.
If the water is left in place for more than 72 hours, mold and mildew become the biggest cause of damages. Mold and mildew damages usually cannot be repaired. Carpets must be dried properly and can be treated with an odor treatment or Sporicidin (an EPA Registered Product) to prevent mold and mildew growth.

Portland Homeowners: 5 tips to prevent costly water damage from frozen pipes

A frozen pipe bursting is a terrible ordeal to come home to, but did you know your pipe could still be frozen without bursting? The following five tips can help you identify and thaw frozen pipes if you ever find them in your home or business.
- If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe. Likely places for frozen pipes include against exterior walls or where your water service enters your home through the foundation.
- Keep the faucet open. As you treat the frozen pipe and the frozen area begins to melt, water will begin to flow through the frozen area. Running water through the pipe will help melt ice in the pipe.
- Apply heat to the section of the pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hair dryer, a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or other open flame device.
- Apply heat until full water pressure is restored. If you are unable to locate the frozen area, if the frozen area is not accessible, or if you can not thaw the pipe, call a licensed plumber.
- Check all other faucets in your home to find out if you have additional frozen pipes. If one pipe freezes, others may freeze, too.
Be prepared for water damage before it happens! Call SERVPRO of Northwest Portland at 503-283-3658 for any questions, and don’t hesitate to mitigate the damage the minute you see it!

How small leaks can cause devastating water damage
2/28/2019 (Permalink)
Over time, those little drips can really add up!

Water Damage: Time is of the essence!
2/19/2019 (Permalink)
When it comes to water restoration, the longer you wait, the more secondary damage WILL occur! Call us today! 503-283-3658
Major water damage requires a bit more than just a mop and a few towels. Failure to start the remediation process as soon as possible can put you at risk for more extensive damage. The IICRC recommends starting any major water remediation process immediately to avoid severe, long term structural problems.
Here are just a FEW examples of some of the issues you can face if you wait to act on a water loss:
MOLD
Failure to ventilate and dehumidify the structure in an expedient manor can result in extensive mold growth. Even after the structure has been dried, additional anti-microbial measures should be taken to avoid growth in the future. A professional should be contacted to determine the areas with higher mold susceptibility.
DRY ROT/ STRUCTURAL DAMAGE
The area needs to be dried in a timely manner to avoid wood rot. Wood is not the only building material subject to damage when exposed to water. For example, laminate, and other materials can separate from the surface with long tern water exposure.
HEALTH RELATED ISSUES
Heath problems associated with mold growth are well documented. Another concern that should be considered is the type of water that created the damage. Clean water can cause enough damage on it’s own, but when black or grey water is added to the mix, dangerous fungus, bacteria and other micro-organisms become a concern.
SERVPRO of Northwest Portland is a water damage specialist with a documented history of fast, reliable and professional results in both the commercial and residential sectors. We are also available 24/7, because an emergency does not wait to be scheduled. If you need immediate help, call us now. 503-283-3658
Sump Pump Failure
1/10/2019 (Permalink)
A sump pump is a common feature in Portland, but what do you do when it fails?
Pre Vacation Water Disaster Preparedness
10/30/2018 (Permalink)
If you ever come home from vacation to find your home flooded, call us immediately! 503-283-3658
With the holiday season upon us, many folks are making travel plans and preparing to visit friends and family around the country.
While you are away on vacation, the last thing you want to worry about is water damage to your home. Unfortunately, a water loss can strike at any time, whether or not you are present for it. Here are a few tips you can use to minimize the potential of water damage to your home whilst away.
Quick pre-departure home inspection
After you have bought your plane tickets and packed your luggage, make sure to do a quick inspection around your home for potential problematic areas. Have a look at the pipes under your sinks, look for any issues with your water heater or furnace, inspect the supply lines that connect your major appliances and check the gutters and roof for any leaks, blockages or abnormalities.
This quick step can greatly reduce the potential for damage while you are away and give you peace of mind in the process.
Turn off the water main
An easy way to insure that you have no water related issues while you are away is to simply turn the water main off. It may be days before someone discovers standing water in their home, and turning off the water main on the way out the door will eliminate the potential to find unwanted surprises when they return.
Hire a house sitter
It’s always a good idea to have a trusted friend, family member or neighbor keep an eye on your home while you are away. Even better if they can stop in once or twice a day to make sure everything is in order. Make sure that whoever you choose receives adequate instructions and emergency contact information.
Nobody wants to return to their home after a fun vacation to find water damage, but sometimes, despite best efforts, they can still happen.
If you do return from your vacation to find water damage in your home, stay calm and contact a reputable water restoration contractor such as SERVPRO of NW Portland immediately. The longer you wait, the more there is a chance for secondary damage.
We are water damage specialists who get started promptly to get your property dry and back to pre-water-damage condition. We use advanced water removal and drying equipment and implement scientific drying principles to get your property dried quickly. If you have experienced a water related disaster in your Portland home, call us today. 503-283-3658
How Rain Water Can Affect Your Home’s Foundation
9/11/2018 (Permalink)
Is your foundation safe from settling?
The Portland area sees a lot of precipitation, and when we get a call from a homeowner after major rainfall, we often see damaged foundations. It’s more than just a cosmetic issue or risks associated with mold. Water can affect the structural integrity of your home’s foundation. Here are a few ways how water can wreak havoc on your foundation.
Saturated Soil: Water can accumulate around your home and cause the surrounding soil to loosen, making it easier for water to penetrate into you home. One way to help combat this problem in your home is to make sure your gutters and downspouts are clean and in proper working order.
Erosion of Soil: Water that is not diverted away from your home may cause the supporting soil to erode away. This can cause your home to settle. This problem may take years to surface. Some subtle signs to look for are cracks in the drywall or plaster, leaning chimneys and uneven floors. In the aftermath of a flood, a thorough inspection by a qualified technician should be performed to insure that your home has not started to settle.
Buildup of Hydrostatic Pressure: Hydrostatic pressure occurs when the soil surrounding your foundation becomes oversaturated. This excessive pressure can cause the walls of your foundation to press inward and cause bowing and cracking. This can happen over time or suddenly after a heavy rain storm.
Generally speaking, homeowners rarely think about their home’s foundation until it has become noticeably damaged. By that time, it may already be too late and result in costly repairs that may have been diverted with some attention to detail and preventative maintenance. If you suspect that you home’s foundation has become compromised, call the experts at SERVPRO of NW Portland today to discuss your options. 503-283-3658
SERVPRO Techniques for Odor Removal After a Water Loss
9/5/2018 (Permalink)
After Water Removal, SERVPRO Adds an Aromatic Treatment.
Water damage to your living room happens in the blink of an eye. It only takes a leak from an upstairs bathroom, and before you know it, you are struggling with water-logged carpets, wet furniture, and damp walls and floors.
SERVPRO is on hand to remove water immediately and remediate the water damage to your Portland home so you can resume daily life “Like it never even happened.” However, there is more to remediation than drying out the affected area: There is also the question of how to remove the unpleasant damp smell afterward.
Although water is odorless, water-logged rooms can soon start to give off a nasty, musty odor that makes the house smell bad. Clients have told us their biggest challenges following a water damage event is the lingering smell. That is why we train our technicians to tackle any residual odors and leave your home smelling as fresh and clean as it did before the incident.
Air scrubbers are very useful for dealing with damp smells. The machine draws in contaminated air and passes it through true HEPA filtration. HEPA filters are capable of catching particles down to 0.3 microns, thus removing smells and releasing clean air back into the room.
Wet fogging is useful for getting into all the little nooks and crannies where odors hide. We choose the most appropriate product to deodorize your affected areas, and the fogging machine releases the product as a very fine mist which penetrates even hard to reach corners.
Our IICRC-certified technicians know that it is important to check for small, hidden sources of damp smells. Sometimes there is a patch of carpet or a couch cushion that, despite being completely dry, smells a little bit musty. In such cases, we can hand spray disinfectant onto the affected area, or even inject small amounts of the product if spraying or other methods are not practical. For example, if it is not possible to lift up a wet carpet, it is possible to inject deodorization products into it to remove the smell and freshen the carpet.
SERVPRO of NW Portland understands the importance of restoring your home quickly. That is why we end every deodorization session by positioning powerful venting box fans to help remove odors and ensure your room smells fresh once more.
For help removing damp smells from your home, call SERVPRO of NW Portland at (503) 283-3658 today.
Water Damage & Homeowners Insurance
7/19/2018 (Permalink)
In the event of a water damage emergency, do you know if your Portland home is covered?

The Cause of Sewage Back Up
3/2/2018 (Permalink)
A bit of preventative maintenance can go a long way when it comes to your home's sewer/ drainage system.

Heavy rains were no match for our team!
Although a basement can flood at any time, flooding most often occurs during heavy rainfall. Because of the nature of basements, they are inherently prone to flooding. Here are a few reasons why your Portland basement could flood.
- Due to heavy rains, surface water can pool around the perimeter of your home.
- Foundation drainage system failure of blockage.
- Water supply line breakage/ freezing or hot water tank failure.
- Blockage or failure of sewage lateral pipe.
- Sump pump failure.
- Storm drain failure.
- Backup of sanitary sewer.
This list is not intended to be exhaustive, as there are many unknown factors that could cause flooding.
The flooding in this Portland basement was caused by surface water around the home. The Portland area had received a substantial amount of precipitation, causing the groundwater around the perimeter of the basement to swell, resulting in about 6 inches of standing water in the basement.
Within an hour of being contacted by the customer, our crew was onsite ready to begin the remediation process. Utilizing advanced inspection and monitoring equipment, we were able to completely dry the basement within 4 days. Additionally, our contents department was able to salvage much of the customers belongings as well.
To avoid severe damage to your home’s structure, as well as secondary damage caused by mold, water damage needs to be handled quickly and efficiently. The problem will not go away with time. The longer you delay the process, the higher the chances for secondary damage as well as potential health problems within the home.

Many Portland homeowners who find damaged areas in their residence often try to patch the area up with store-bought repair materials. These items are typically only for temporary repairs, not permanent ones. Water can damage a home in various ways, each requiring its own solution.
When your Portland home needs water damage restoration, SERVPRO can assist you with the needed work. Experts in restoration work can save you both time and money by doing the repairs the correct way, the first time. This eliminates the need for temporary materials, which restoration professionals need to remove before performing more permanent repairs.
SERVPRO technicians restore homes by removing sections full of water damage and then replacing the needed materials. Cleaning away the grime and grit that comes along with deterioration can revitalize some materials enough that replacement becomes unnecessary. Removing some materials leads to the discovery of additional damage on the wooden beams that make up the framework of a home.
Replacing structural supports with like materials restores the strength of the home's interior structure. Many homeowners experience an absence of creaking after this type of restoration. Window frames and doors become a bit more square once this happens, also, making them easier to open and close.
When water damage affects windows and doorways, reframing them can solve the problem. Cabinets can also become water-damaged and require repair work. How We Help Deodorize Your Portland Living Room After Water Damage

After Portland Post Water Removal SERVPRO Adds an Aromatic Treatment
SERVPRO Techniques for Odor Removal Post Water Intrusions
SERVPRO understands the importance of restoring your home quickly. That is why we end every deodorization session by positioning powerful venting box fans to help remove odors and ensure your room smells fresh once more.
